So, I noticed both OSU and OU recently completed their individual Day of Giving campaigns (Give Orange 2024 & 1Oklahoma 2024). And a number of those donations were designated for athletics at both places. I had always thought that OSU had substantially more alumni than OU. Anyway, the totals for each university varied significantly. As of this post, OSU shows $1,279,999 was donated by 2,354 donors. For OU as of this post, OU shows $26,648,681 was donated by 7,073 donors. How in the world can the difference be that great? OSU has a number of successful and prominent alumni and donors capable of making large donations, so I just don't get it.

Where did you get this info? Can you provide a link or source?

OU has to undertake MASSIVE spending to compete with the SEC and Big 10. This is likely the reason OU donations are way higher this year, if your post is accurate.

Check out this post yesterday on the OU Board........with quotes from the OU President:

"Harroz told OU Daily that if Norman City Council does not approve the proposed $1 billion entertainment district that would feature a new arena for OU athletics, then the university, alongside donors, would look to other cities to build an arena for which its basketball and women’s gymnastics teams would be anchor tenants and possibly the entertainment district as a whole.

“I’m very hopeful and do everything I can to keep it here in Norman,” Harroz said. “But if this isn’t approved by the city council for whatever reason, then we’re going to be looking at other (cities), Oklahoma City, Moore, surrounding areas and figure out where is there a group that wants to do this.”

I got the information from the OSU Foundation & the OU Foundation. They’re the two organizations that are responsible for raising and managing donations for each university. And yes, the Harroz article seems silly at best. So he’s trying to tell people that OU will build its new arena in Moore or OKC or somewhere else if the City of Norman doesn’t approve the proposed new arena? Yeah, right. Lol.

That seems very puzzling. I recall several years ago seeing data that showed we have significantly more alumni living in Oklahoma than uo which I think can be traced back to our land grant university roots but there has to a rest of the story component to those figures somewhere.

Can we trust their numbers? They somehow found a way to cheat in academics in the past. 1.3 million is pretty good for 36 hours of fundraising.

I don't know where you got data that says OSU has more living alumni than OSU. At least in my lifetime, OU has always had a larger student body population than Oklahoma State. They have 10k more undergraduates on campus than OSU this year. Multiple that out and it becomes pretty significant pretty fast. It's easier to raise more money when you have more people to give. If you're talking OSI's branch campuses, it starts to even out more but I don't know what people who went to OSU-OKC full time are as committed to donating than those who went to OSU-Stillwater, or OU, for that matter.

Since foundations such as OSU's and OU's are audited on an annual basis, I think their numbers are real. After checking each foundation website, it looks like the same auditing company audits both the OSU Foundation and the OU Foundation. As you say, $1.3 million in 36 hours isn't anything to sneeze at, but $26.5 million + in 24 hours is decidedly better. I just wonder why OSU doesn't seem to do better and get closer to that number.

Yeah, the multi-campus system for OSU makes it a little different than OU, which only has the 3 campuses.

I got the data from the OSU alumni association. When I was at OSU in the late 60s we had a larger freshman class than uo so it hasn't always been that their enrollment is greater than ours. Uo also has more out of state students than we do who typically don't have any ties to Oklahoma and leave when they can. That study was published about 20 years ago but I'm betting it's still pretty close to being accurate. Now if you want to talk about who has the most athletic fans then it's easily uo because of all the non uo graduates who claim allegiance to them. But we have more graduates living in the state than they do.

Now we’re taking our inferiority complex to donations?!?

    OU is gone.

    Let’s just enjoy OSU now.

Hey sorry about that. Just wondered why we don’t do better as alumni and donors. OSU does have a large alumni base regardless of what others have said. The Oklahoman ran a story a few years back that compared OSU & OU alumni bases and we fared just fine . I was able to donate modest amounts to the softball & some fine arts programs yesterday during the process.

Looking at the numbers, ou would have averaged over $3800 per donor. That seems high, and I suspect there wore a few big gifts that brought the average up a lot.
According to Google, ou has an endowment of $1.67 billion and OSU has $1.71 billion. Not that different.

University foundations undertake a variety of fundraising activities. What happens in a single "day of giving" doesn't tell me that much. For example, did some large donations happen to be timed to be be part of that activity, or not. A better comparison would be to look at total donations (and the number of different donors) on an annual or multi-year basis. And the size of the overall endowment is a long-term marker as well.

That's actually a very good point. Some donors giving significant amounts may have waited until yesterday to officially make their donations, to make the Day of Giving amount look better. It actually looks like both foundations are in great shape, which is great news given how poorly the State funds higher education. OSU Foundation shows audited assets of $1.63 billion for 2023 while OU Foundation shows $2.70 billion. Neither amount is anything to sneeze at tbh.
