My Project
Our students thrive in the setting we are able to create for them. Many of our students come to us with background involving trauma. They are struggling with a range of emotions stemming from anxiety, abuse, and addiction to name a few.
We use a variety of methods to help improve student mental health.
One of my classes uses photography to help students express themselves, their styles, and their feelings. It's amazing to see some of the quietest students come alive as they are able to express themselves through pictures.
Another class plans a cookout every 9 weeks along with activities to engage students. They design shirts to wear any time we do service activities and then again at the cookout. Each cookout, they like to add something new. This coming year, we would love to incorporate snow cones. When they work together to accomplish a greater goal, they feel a part of something bigger than themselves. They feel needed and helpful. One student even said, "It's giving me a sense of accomplishment amidst my depression."
There are so many ways we try to make students feel wanted and accepted. We try to improve their mental health not only so they will learn in the classroom, but so they will be successful after graduation.
