How to Finally Get Rid of Pesky Pet Hair From Clothes, According to Pro Cleaners (2)

If you're a pet owner, you know that removing pet hair from clothes can be a daily challenge. It clings to most materials, from woven knits to thick denim, and not only does it make clothes look messy, but it can also clog your washing machine's filter if not removed before laundry day.

To help you keep your wardrobe pet hair-free, we asked cleaning and laundry experts to share the best methods for removing pet hair from clothes. The three methods ahead are quick, efficient, inexpensive, and use items you may already have at home. This way, you won't need to stress over the clump of hair the next time you head out.

Meet the Expert

Damp Rubber Gloves

For a quick and effective way to remove pet hair from clothes, Bryan Griffin, founder of Patriot Maids Cleaning Services, recommends using a slightly dampened pair of rubber gloves.

"The rubber material attracts hair, pulling it away from the fabric efficiently," he says.

  1. Grab a pair of clean rubber gloves and check to make sure there isn't any paint or cleaning solution residue on them that could potentially transfer onto your clothes.
  2. Once you've put the gloves on, dampen them slightly. You want them to be damp but not dripping wet.
  3. Working in long strokes, brush the surfaces of the pet's hair-covered clothes with dampened gloves. Repeat until all the pet hair has lifted.
  4. Rinse the gloves to remove all the collected pet hair.

Warning

If the pet hair removal method you choose involves water, check the care label on the clothing first to ensure water won't cause damage. Additionally, avoid using a lint brush on delicate garments or woven knits as its textured surface can snag delicate fabrics and pull yarn on some knits.

Reusable Lint Brush

Disposable lint rollers are a popular method for removing pet hair from clothes, but Frej Lewenhaupt, co-founder and chief product officer at Steamery, says you should switch to a reusable lint brush instead.

"I recommend steering clear of the disposable sticky tape lint rollers as they are wasteful and leave a residue of glue on the garment you’re trying to clean," Lewenhaupt says.

  1. Invest in a reusable lint brush whose textured fabric surface lifts and catches hair.
  2. Using long, single-direction strokes, swipe the lint brush over the surface of the clothes. Repeat the motion until all the pet hair has been collected.
  3. Discard the collected pet hair from the brush so it doesn't build up and is ready for the next time it's needed.

Tip

It's important to remove as much pet hair as possible before tossing clothes into the washing machine according to Griffin. This will prevent the machine's filter from getting clogged and avoid transferring hair back onto clothes during the wash cycle.

Dryer Sheets

To quickly remove pet hair from clothes before you throw them in the washer, Griffin suggests using dryer sheets.

"The anti-static properties help to loosen the pet hair, making it easier to shake off or pull away with a lint roller," he says.

  1. Take out a single dryer sheet and shake it out to unfold.
  2. Lightly brush the surface of the pet hair-covered clothes, using long, single-direction strokes.
  3. Once you have loosened as much pet hair as possible, shake it off or remove it with a lint brush before throwing the garment in the washer. This will help prevent clogging your washing machine as well.

Tip

If you're a pet owner, consider investing in an air purifier. Not only does it deodorize the air and catch dust and allergens, but it can also help reduce the amount of pet hair that's floating in the air. While it won't completely eliminate pet hair from your clothes, it can help cut down the amount of hair that gets stuck to your clothes.
