Apply now for Leadership Little Traverse Class of 2025; Deadline is July 15th

The application window has opened for the next class of Leadership Little Traverse. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Monday, July 15th. Applications are available online.

Leadership Little Traverse is a community leadership program hosted by the Petoskey Regional and Harbor Springs Area Chambers of Commerce. The class of 2025 will be the 24th class to go through the program. Sessions begin in September of 2024 and will be held monthly through May 2025. Each session is a full day in length and introduces class members to different facets of the community while helping them hone personal leadership skills.

This is an incredible opportunity to:

  1. Learn about the state of our community, its systems, and current issues.
  2. Develop your civic leadership skills and capacity to make an impact.
  3. Find your path and commit to doing 'community better' in the Little Traverse Bay Region.

In addition to the classroom experiences, the participants will undertake a class-wide community service project and a personal leadership project. Each participant will develop a mentor relationship with a community leader.

The leadership program cost is $900 per person. A limited number of scholarships will be available for those who need financial assistance. Class size is limited, and members of the class are selected based on the strength of their application.

Does this sound like something you would love to do? Or, do you have an employee you would like to help with their leadership development? Get started today - The deadline to apply is July 15th.

We offer both an online application, as well as a printed version. You can learn more about the program and access the applications here. The application will take time and thought to complete properly. More applications will be received than the 16 available slots, so applicants are encouraged to spend time and put some good thought into their answers.

If you have any questions contact Bonnie Kulp at 231-526-7999 or [emailprotected].

Check out the updated booth map and openings for record largest Art Show at Nub's Nob on July 10

A record number of artists have registered for the July 10th Art Show at Nub’s Nob Resort, but there are still about 10 booth spaces available in this year’s expanded show. The Art Show is organized by the Harbor Springs Area Chamber and the Northern Michigan Women's Club.

Here is the updated Booth Map and Pricing, and here is the Artist Contract/Application for artists who would like to participate.

The chamber and the Women’s Club teamed up to restart the Art Show in 2023, after a three-year pandemic hiatus. Last year’s show was a major success, attracting 84 artists and hundreds of art lovers. More than 100 artists are expected this year. The organizers have announced that Birchwood Farms Golf & Country Club has come aboard as the Premier Sponsor for the event.

“It’s a great match to have Birchwood Farms, one of the premier country clubs in the region, joining us to sponsor one of the premier art shows in Northern Michigan,” said Chamber Executive Director Bonnie Kulp.

The Art show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 10th. Admission is a suggested donation of $5. Proceeds from the Art Show benefit the Harbor Springs Chamber and the many charitable organizations supported by the Northern Michigan Women's Club. Anyone with questions may contact Bonnie at the chamber, 231-526-7999, or email [emailprotected].

The Bay View Association, dedicated to enriching the human experience through a focus on the arts, education, religion, and recreation, kicks off their summer of concerts June 16 with “Free For All.” This is a collection which, like its name, invites anyone who wishes to join in the celebration of music in the historic community this summer.

A variety of pieces will be performed, many centered around a joyous welcome to summer. Audiences will find themselves drawn in by vocal pieces “Ain’t-a That Good News” featuring Soprano Risa Renae Harman, performances by the Festival Choir and local chamber choir Noteable. Ludwa will later serenade the audience with his rendition of “Leningrad” by Billy Joel, a song about the cold war and friendships that transcend borders and national allegiances.

Other showpieces in the set include “An American in Paris” with faculty clarinetist Spencer Prewitt and newcomer Hee-Kyung Juhn on piano. The Bay View String Quartet will return to the stage with a lively work called “Skylife.” Audiences will also get a sneak peek at “Dueling Pianos Vol. II,” a faculty recital performed by Patterson-Robards Piano Duo on the following Wednesday, June 19.

While no tickets are needed for Opening Night, tickets to the rest of the season are on sale to the public now - details and more information.

Community Foundation welcomes new staff

The Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation has welcomed two new staff members to their team: Jennifer Murphy and Elizabeth Erlewine.

Jen Murphy has stepped into the role of Director of Finance and Operations (DFO). Murphy brings a wealth of experience with her, having recently served as Director of Operations for Coldwell Banker Fairbairn Realty in Alanson. Murphy also holds the position of Clerk-Treasurer for the Village of Alanson, an appointment she has held for nearly nine years. Murphy earned her BA in Social Work and MA in Public Administration from Saginaw Valley State University. She joins the Community Foundation as the organization’s former DFO, Laurissa Wendland, transitions to retirement. Wendland has been part of the Community Foundation’s staff for almost 28 years. Murphy is working alongside Wendland during this transition.

Liz Erlewine is the Community Foundation’s new Director of Communications and Donor Engagement, a position that expands her 15-year career as a creative storyteller and community connector in the non-profit sector. Erlewine joins the team after six years as Visual Arts Director for Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey. Prior to her work in Northern Michigan, Erlewine served as Director, Head Curator for Purdue University Galleries. Erlewine holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA from Purdue University.

DJ Jones, Community Foundation Executive Director, said, “I am thrilled to welcome Liz and Jen to the Community Foundation team. Their experience and skills will take us to the next level, helping us carry out our strategic initiatives and realize our vision of community impact and leadership.”

Raven Hill is inviting everyone to help us build a labyrinth in the Ancient World on June 21st. Participating Labyrinth Builders are invited to bring individual rocks, which will be used collectively to construct a labyrinth. This collaborative event emphasizes community involvement, creativity, plus it is a shared effort to create a symbolic and meditative structure. So, join us at the Obelisk in the Ancient World on Friday, June 21 at 6 PM for an unforgettable evening, including a "community labyrinth construction gathering."

We will celebrate the longest day of the year and share in the excitement of creating a grand labyrinth in Raven Hill’s Ancient World. Bring a 10 to 12-inch diameter rock to donate and join Raven Hill’s elite Labyrinth Builders Club. Be a part of this lastinglegacy at Raven Hill and leave your special stone for future generations to admire. Don’t miss this chance to contribute to an extraordinary and enduring exhibit! If you can’t make it on the 21st, bring your special rock to add to the labyrinth when you visit next, either before or after the Summer Solstice. Participants will receive a certificate of membership in the Labyrinth Builders Club and will be invited to join in a celebration of the finished labyrinth at a date yet to be determined.

While you are here, you can also visit the ever-evolving Under Michigan & Beyond exhibit. Currently, Raven Hill is open weekdays from 10am to 4pm, Saturdays from noon to 4pm and Sundays from 2pm to 4pm, as well as other times by appointment.

Note: Raven Hill already has a small labyrinth in front of the Main Museum building. It is a favorite of the 5-year-old crowd, who often insist on walking all their “big people” through the winding pathways of the labyrinth and doing it one person at a time!

Reprinted from MLive: An up-north Indigenous tribe wants to build a sanctuary for bald eagles found sick and injured across a large part of Michigan. The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Tribe wants to take a leadership role in caretaking these large raptors and that requires proper facilities. There isn’t such a center for the northern Lower Peninsula and eastern Upper Peninsula since a legendary raptor rehabilitator and advocate retired several years ago.

Now the Harbor Springs-based tribe is seeking donations from the public and any interested organizations to meet a financial match requirement deadline in July for a $250,000 grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Tribe in Minnesota. If successful, that would push the tribe to $1.8 million raised and allow officials to move forward with the first two phases of the eagle aviary plan, including a rehabilitation flight pen and enclosure, as well as office and laboratory space. The tribe’s plan includes a third $500,000 phase to come later that will have a display area and aviary for eagles that cannot be released back to nature. Full story.

By Hannah Bianchi, Harbor Springs Farmers Market Master

It’s officially strawberry season. Both Farmer White’s and Guntzvillers have lots of delicious fresh berries. Fiddlehead Farm has the first of the garlic scapes, which means Black Barn Farm garlic scape pesto is just a few weeks away. Fresh Great Lakes fish is back at the Mshko’Ode booth, and that fish pairs beautifully with some of the last asparagus of the season.

School is officially out, which means it’s almost time for our first Kids Day of the season. Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 22. The much anticipated bounce house, provided by Northern Michigan Bounce House Co., is returning. There will also be scavenger hunts, story time, crafts, face painting, and prizes. And just in time for summer break, all of our youth merch has arrived: t-shirts in two colors and sweatshirts.

Starting Wednesday, June 19th, we are bringing back our “Sprouts for Sprouts” program. Kids who attend the market get to pick out a free tomato plant to plant in their own home gardens. Along with this program, there are many activities for kids that happen daily; including coloring pages, scavenger hunts, and “Kids Club” cards. Bring your kiddos downtown for a chance to enjoy the market and all that we offer.

Our Guest of the Market on Saturday include Little Traverse Bay Candles, Harbor Girl with whimsical succulents, and Stone & Steel Blacksmith.

Our Young Entrepreneurs on Saturday include Colin Lustgarten with his popular lavender shortbread cookies and Sean Sullivan with paracord bracelets and handmade foam swords. This program keeps growing year to year, and we love seeing how Young Entrepreneurs gain confidence, become more comfortable speaking with adults, and continue to find ways to improve their ideas. We are almost booked for the season with more than 40 young entrepreneurs, a new record.
