When thinking of one genre that dominates the Xbox brand, it has to be FPS games. There's Halo, all the FPS games from Bethesda, including Doom, and of course, Call of Duty from Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Xbox is the FPS console, so it's no surprise a ton of amazing titles in the genre are on it.

Updated on June 28, 2024, by Dominic Allen: Xbox has to be the FPS console with so many great FPS games available and more coming down the pipeline. The recent Xbox Games Showcase showed off plenty of stellar FPS titles coming to Xbox Game Pass day one, like Perfect Dark, Doom: The Dark Ages, and, of course, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. This list was updated with even more incredible FPS games on Series X|S to prepare you for the amazing lineup for the rest of 2024 and beyond.

15 Call Of Duty: Black Ops 3

The Best COD Zombies Experience

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (7)
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
Platform(s)
PS4 , Xbox One , PC

Released
November 6, 2015
Developer(s)
Treyarch
Publisher(s)
Activision

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will mark the triumphant return of round-based Zombies, and if you've never played the mode, the perfect starting point would be Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. This title has the best Zombies experience hands-down in its maps and gameplay.

From the classic maps to the more difficult and complex newer maps, Blops 3, with all the DLC included, is a treat that you can play for dozens of hours and still try something new. The multiplayer's a lot of fun as well, and the campaign is, frankly, underrated, even though the story's way too complicated for its own good.

14 Doom Eternal

The Only Thing They Fear Is You

DOOM Eternal
Platform(s)
Xbox One , Stadia , PC , PS4

Released
March 20, 2020
Developer(s)
id Software
Publisher(s)
Bethesda

One of the best action-focused FPS games in recent years has to be Doom Eternal. The action-packed arena fights deliver satisfying combat like no other, especially if you crank up the difficulty or play the brutal Master Levels. The lore was nicely expanded as well, and you get an awesome hub area to explore and find unlockables.

It wouldn't be complete without an incredible soundtrack by Mick Gordon in his last outing in a Doom game. Sadly, Doom Eternal won't be for everyone since the core gameplay loop of glory, burning, and chainsaw kills can become boring for some. For most others, though, this game will be a blast from start to finish.

13 Rainbow Six Siege

The Premier Tactical Shooter

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (9)
Rainbow Six: Siege
Platform(s)
PS4 , PS5 , Xbox One , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S , Amazon Luna , Stadia , PC

Released
December 1, 2015

Developer(s)
Ubisoft Montreal
Publisher(s)
Ubisoft

The Rainbow Six series was always pretty good, but with Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft knocked it so out of the park that the ball landed in the next city. The tactical gameplay here is unrivaled with the huge amount of depth, strategy, and teamwork required. Not only that, but Rainbow Six Siege is incredibly fun, both casually and competitively.

Only seasoned gamers can thrive in these FPS titles.

You can be in a group that's not that good and still have a ton of fun playing Casuals or playing Terrorist Hunt missions when they were around. Sadly, that mode was recently removed. The game's still getting new content to this day and has to be among the greatest Ubisoft games of all time.

12 Serious Sam Collection

"This Is Getting Serious"

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (11)

Release Year

Platforms

2020

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC (as Serious Sam Fusion)

One FPS series you might not have played is Serious Sam. These are some of the most fun and thrilling FPS titles you can play right now. Fighting against a ludicrous amount of enemies all by yourself just never gets old, and the games are packed with secrets and Easter eggs that'll keep you exploring.

The Serious Sam Collection contains the First and Second Encounter, plus Serious Sam 3 and a few DLC packs. The former are the best parts of the package, as Serious Sam 3 only really picks up during the last third. You can also play cooperatively, which is great, too, but you do lose that one-man army power fantasy feel.

11 GoldenEye 007

The Update This Game Desperately Needed

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (12)
GoldenEye 007
Platform(s)
N64 , Xbox One

Released
August 25, 1997
Developer(s)
Rare

Publisher(s)
Nintendo

A game that's often thought of as aged and dated is GoldenEye 007. It's understandable because the controls are so alien in today's age. The N64 only had one stick, so Rare had to work with what it had.

After 26 years, GoldenEye was finally rereleased on Switch and Xbox, and Nintendo got shafted hard. While the Switch has online multiplayer, it doesn't have the standard dual-stick controls you'd expect now. The Xbox port does, however, and it looks way better, too. GoldenEye has never played smoother, making the title age so much better now.

10 The Darkness

A Gem Of A Comic Book Game

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (13)
The Darkness
Platform(s)
PS3 , Xbox 360

Released
June 25, 2007

Developer(s)
Starbreeze Studios
Publisher(s)
2K Games

Comic book games aren't always of the superhero variety, especially during the 2000s when gaming was a bit more experimental. The Darkness is a good example, as it still feels fresh. This is no ordinary FPS, as it's actually a small open world and you use the subway system to get around. You can do side quests with the various people you meet, but make sure not to kill any interesting NPCs, as it's permanent.

The action is quite fun and challenging, with you needing to strategically use your Darkness powers to get by. The story's great, with amazing voice acting, and its depiction of Hell is still stunning today. Nothing here is incredibly dated, so you can hop into this game now and still have a good time.

9 The Orange Box

The Ultimate Valve Package

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (14)

Release Year

Platforms

2007

PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

It's very interesting, looking back now, that a Game of the Year contender for 2007 was a game compilation. The Orange Box was a pretty big deal because it was the first game compilation of this size, and the titles were recent. You got three new games: Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2.

The company might not be able to count up to three, but it surely delivers some fantastic games.

You also got vanilla Half-Life 2 and its first episode, along with the package. The value at the time was massive, and all five games were phenomenal. The 360 servers for Team Fortress 2 are still active, but what's even better is that on Series X, it runs at a near 4K resolution. Playing Half-Life 2 on a console has never been better.

8 Titanfall 2

One Of The Best FPS Campaigns In Recent Times

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (16)
Titanfall 2
Platform(s)
PS4 , Xbox One , PC

Released
October 28, 2016
Developer(s)
Respawn Entertainment
Publisher(s)
Electronic Arts

Similar to Rockstar's Bully, Titanfall has a massive fanbase begging for a new entry. To be fair, if you play Titanfall 2, you might understand why. The developer Respawn Entertainment consists of a lot of classic Call of Duty devs, and the campaign's quality is not only what you would expect based on that pedigree; it's even better.

With great villains, sweet gameplay, and many action-packed moments, it's still a fun campaign to replay. If you're used to Call of Duty, though, it can be a bit hard to adapt to the movement of Titanfall. On Xbox Series X, you can also play this game at 120fps, which is pretty cool.

7 Perfect Dark

The Perfect Spiritual Sequel

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (17)

Release Year

Platforms

2000

N64, Switch (via Switch Online), Xbox 360

An N64 classic, Perfect Dark is essentially the real sequel to GoldenEye 007, made by the same devs at Rare. It's not as iconic, but a better game in every regard. The levels are better, with not nearly as many unfair frustrating objectives, the arsenal kicks all sorts of ass, and the multiplayer was also improved.

The N64 original is very badly optimized for the platform, but this 360 remaster fixes all of that with the addition of modern controls. You also get new textures, which is nice compared to the GoldenEye Xbox port. Like many Rare 360 games, it also runs at near 4K on Xbox Series X, which is the cherry on top.

6 Quake

Pushing Gaming Technology Like No Other

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (18)
Quake
Platform(s)
PC , Switch , Nintendo 64 , PS4 , PS5 , Xbox One , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S , Sega Saturn

Released
May 22, 1996
Developer(s)
id Software
Publisher(s)
Bethesda , GT Interactive

Nightdive Studios' 2021 remaster of Quake is excellent. For the longest time, a PC-perfect console port of Quake was nowhere to be seen, in contrast to Doom, which had quite a lot by 2021. The wait was worth it, though. You get all the additional expansions, and it's one of the best games on Xbox to play at 120fps.

It's super smooth, unlike other 120fps titles, which are rather inconsistent. The base game hasn't aged the best, but the expansions are really good. The ones by MachineGames are especially fantastic, with huge levels and high enemy counts.

5 Prey (2017)

A Modern FPS Classic

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (19)
Prey
Platform(s)
PS4 , Xbox One , PC

Released
May 5, 2017
Developer(s)
Arkane Studios
Publisher(s)
Bethesda

The best game by Arkane Studios, hands down, is Prey. This is one title that hooks you in very quickly with a phenomenal opening. It has a great use of an intrigue plot that will compel you to finish the game to learn what is going on here.

Great action experiences with your subscription.

The gameplay's also really good, being reminiscent of System Shock. With it on Game Pass, it's an absolute must-play. The only issue is that the game frankly shouldn't have been called Prey because it was nothing to do with the 2006 classic FPS of the same name. It just causes confusion between the two.

4 Doom (1993) And Doom 2

Arguably The FPS GOAT

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (21)

Release Year

Platforms

2019

PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, iOS, Android, PC

It's wild to realize that Doom is over 30 years old. What's even more impressive is how much the game still holds up in its fun factor. The weapons and enemy roster are great, though the levels can be inconsistent in quality. The newest port on modern systems, including Xbox, are the best so far, with everything ironed out at this point.

You get all six official classic Doom campaigns and a lot of quality community-made wads. There's so much content here, and it's still a blast whether you're going through Knee Deep in the Dead or the brutally hard Plutonia Experiment.

3 Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

An All-Time Great FPS

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (22)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
Platform(s)
PC , PS3 , Xbox 360 , PS4 , Xbox One , macOS

Released
November 10, 2009
Developer(s)
Infinity Ward
Publisher(s)
Activision

One of the most important shooters, as well as one of the best FPS games in the decade, has to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The multiplayer of this game changed the industry. It was perfectly unbalanced in that it was fun for everyone. New players could use the easy strategies to feel on-level with the top players, while the top people still played the best without using the easy strats.

The kill streak system was great, and the best part is that the 360 servers have been fixed now. For a good while, they were broken, but with this recent fix, there's tons of people playing. This game truly takes you back to the past and still holds up against the newer COD instalments.

2 Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2

One Of The Greatest FPS Games On The Xbox 360

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (23)
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Platform(s)
PS3 , Xbox 360 , PC

Released
November 13, 2012
Developer(s)
Treyarch
Publisher(s)
Activision

The final COD game before the arrival of the PS4 and Xbox One was Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and what a way to go out. Its campaign is objectively the best, with the most replay value while still having a high quality. The multiplayer of Black Ops 2 might not be as overall fun as MW2, but in terms of overall quality and competitiveness, it does come out on top.

There are so many tools in Black Ops 2 that you can always try something different. The servers for this game are also fixed, but Black Ops 2 is pretty expensive on the Microsoft Store, so it's better to get a cheaper physical copy.

1 Halo: The Master Chief Collection

The Definitive Halo Experience

15 Best FPS Games You Can Play On Xbox Series X|S (24)
Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Platform(s)
Xbox One , Xbox Series X , Xbox Series S , PC

Released
November 11, 2014
Developer(s)
343 Industries
Publisher(s)
Xbox Game Studios

Halo's classic entries deserve an amazing remaster, and you can't ask for much more than the current version of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. While it had a disastrous launch, it got all fixed up years later, and it's still receiving new updates. Multiplayer works great, and the anniversary editions of Halo 1 and 2 are so well done.

You can swap between the original and anniversary editions at any time, which is so cool to see the visual differences. It's the best Halo experience you can play today and is the definitive version of these classic titles. The only negative is the size, as it takes up well over 100 GB.
